This illustrated book about one man’s unusual life takes readers on a roller coaster ride of true adventures. The opening chapter sails you down a barrier reef in Belize on a large catamaran ending with a dive through a hole in the bottom of the ocean. There, the author takes you down a cone of blue light as large sharks come out of the darkness to swim around you. Reaching bottom over 100 feet down he shows you what may be the remains of an Ice Age Man’s fire site in a cavern scientists say was once a Pleistocene Era dry cave 11,700 years ago.
This experience is not unusual for this author who grows up in Grand Rapids, Michigan reading adventure books about the magic and mysteries of the underwater world. As a teenager he builds his own diving rig to explore a shipwreck in 40 feet of water ten years before Mr. Cousteau introduces his Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus to America. Burgess joins the 88th Blue Devil Division of U.S. Army Ski Troops in northern Italy at the end of World War II. After the war he returns to Europe to study foreign languages in Italy and Switzerland. Hunting adventure he and a friend cross the Swiss Alps on a motor-scooter at night; and later, with a fighter pilot buddy they live incredible adventures for 3 ½ months on the Isle of Capri.
Finishing studies at Michigan State University Burgess moves to Florida to explore underwater caves; dive in a prehistoric forest and photographs newly uncovered Spanish treasure wrecks. He sport fishes for large sturgeon and sharks for outdoor magazines using everything from inner-tubes to kayaks and canoes. Then he takes his new bride to Europe to motor-scooter 700 miles across the Rivera to have more adventures with fascinating characters on the island of Majorca.
Later, from France he and a buddy cross the Mediterranean with the French Foreign Legion and backpack through North Africa to find a German mountain fortress in Tunisia. Back in Spain at Pamplona Ernest Hemingway is interested enough in this adventure that he invites Burgess to meet his “mob” for drinks. Burgess ends up writing full length books about all of these adventures. This e-book however condenses the best adventures to chapter lengths for a faster read. Robert Burgess has been called a renaissance writer because he covers both the past and the present, writing in a way that readers say makes them feel they are the ones experiencing the adventure. Join them in re-living these remarkable experiences by an author who is still living them.
SAILING TO ADVENTURE The Time of Our Lives eBook Robert F Burgess
This book is well-written and tells of an exciting, adventure-filled life. I learned much about sailing, fishing, and diving. The stories took place in locations all over the world, so it was a wonderful opportunity to armchair travel. Some chapters did include references to the dates, and I would have liked the dates posted at the beginning of each chapter, to give me a better idea of when events happened.Product details

SAILING TO ADVENTURE The Time of Our Lives eBook Robert F Burgess Reviews
I'm no expert and I'm sure he knows more about sailing than I, but found some items/comments/advice that was incorrect. Other advice like build your own bimini with poles is OK if you want a Non-professional homemade cheap looking bimini.
Bob Burgess is a true explorer and an excellent writer.
Once I started, I could not put this book down. Read it entirely through on a rainy, windy day in New Jersey, but Robert's prose made the day pass as if on the sunny beach. Great, credible, knowledgeable author.
